Director of Data Engineering – Sensors, Sensor Analytics and IoT

Savi Technology is looking for an experience data engineer and manager to lead our Data Engineering team. You will own the creation of technology, practices, and operations to ingest petabytes of data using the latest Big Data and Machine Learning technologies. You will provide our end-to-end solutions that enable our customers to make decisions based on information and predictions literally learned by streaming and micro-batch processing of data from sensors, Internet-connected things, open data sources and enterprise feeds.

Our tech stack marries the advantages of traditional application architecture with Lambda “Big Data” processing, providing you the opportunity to work a broad variety of great technologies: Node.js, Kafka, Storm, Spark, Hive, Hadoop, Cassandra, PostGRES, PostGIS, WildFly, Flask, SciKit-Learn, HTML5/LESS.css, Angular and D3.js, iOS and Android (we are even Google Glass Explorers). We use tools like Github Flow, Grunt, Maven and Jenkins with Slack, Hubot, Ansible, and Docker to make development and testing less tedious.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Data Engineering team
  • Provide technical leadership and innovation in the planning, design, development, testing, optimization and performance tuning of applications.
  • Participate in business discovery sessions to provide technical direction required for implementation and delivery of big data initiatives.
  • Define best practices for development and operation of big data applications
  • Ensure architectural adherence through design reviews
  • Proactively identify preventative maintenance

Requirements:

  • BA/BA in computer science, computer engineering or related degree
  • 10+ years experience developing large-scale, distributed data platforms capable of processing TBs of data daily, across hundreds (or thousands) of continuously running jobs (Spark, MapReduce and other ETL/ELT technologies)
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams of Data Engineers
  • Deep understanding of how to design, build and tune file-based, NoSQL, and relational database technologies for high performance, linear-scalability and fault tolerance.
  • Hand-on experience with multiple RDMS platforms, including spatial databases and with multi-node scale NoSQL clusters (e.g., Cassandra, Accumulo, HBase, Hadoop)
  • Hands-on experience using Hive, Impala, Presto and similar tools for SQL-like to explore large, distributed sets of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data

You should also have significant experience in several of the following areas:

  • Design and development of interactive analytics solutions
  • Working knowledge of the Lambda architecture model
  • Use of Storm, Spark or MapReduce to operationalize machine learning algorithms—for both real-time and batch operation
  • Complex batch and micro-batch geospatial programming using GIS databases, servers and libraries (PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, MapServer, GeoServer, GeoDjango, Esri, Google Maps)
  • Data ingestion using queuing technologies such as RabbitMQ/AMQP, Kafka, ZeroMQ, etc.

Even better, you also:

  • Are comfortable with the flexibility of high-agile environments
  • Prefer using Continuous Integration and Deployment to reduce manual work
  • Like to use real-time monitoring to detect and resolve problems before customers see them
  • Interested in Data Science (and blurring the line between Data Engineering & Data Science)
  • Are eligible for a US security clearance

  • Queuing technologies such as RabbitMQ/AMQP, Kafka, Celery, ZeroMQ, etc.
  • Complex Event Processing using Storm, Spark, Drools, Druid or similar technology—especially using these technologies to apply machine learning algorithms
  • Big Data NoSQL databases such as Cassandra, HBase, Accumulo or BigTable
  • GIS programming using PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, MapServer, GeoServer, or GeoDjango
  • Facetted and boosted search using ElasticSearch, SOLR, etc.
  • REST APIs that work over mobile or web interfaces
  • MVC frameworks at the data, server, and front end layers
