Reducing the Amount of Supply Chain Assets in Military Supply Chains
The movement of goods and materiel through global military supply chains is dependent on the use of supply chain assets such as containers, air pallets, racks, railcars, trucks and trailers. These assets must be positioned and available to meet the transportation needs of defense forces both within the homeland supply chain infrastructure of depots, distribution centers, ocean ports and airfields as well as when forces are deployed overseas. However, a lack of visibility to these assets as they move through the supply chain, or where they may be positioned when not in use, can result in misdirected, misplaced and inadvertent stockpiling of supply chain assets in the military supply chain. This can result in a significant excess of asset inventory leading to excessive capital expenditure or lease, rental and demurrage costs. To the other extreme, lack of visibility may also cause critical local asset shortages, which impacts the ability of defense forces to conduct operations and can result in mission critical consequences. These local shortages may also result in additional transportation expenses to reposition urgently needed assets. There is also an over dependence on error ridden, labor intensive, manual processes used to track assets as they move through the supply chain.
The Savi Defense Asset Management Solution addresses the various challenges facing asset management in the global military supply chain. Data is automatically collected on assets as they are shipped through the supply chain from RFID Networks based on Savi's EchoPoint™ technology, bar code scanning, global positioning systems or other data collection methods. When assets arrive at the remote deployment locations outside of the homeland RFID network, the Savi Early Entry Deployment Kit (EEDSK) and Savi Portable Deployment Kit (PDK) allow forces to quickly and easily set up a mobile RFID chokepoint to track assets as they pass through the supply chain. The collected data is managed and viewed in real-time via the Savi SmartChain® Asset Management Application. The resulting process automation improves asset utilization, reducing the amount of assets needed to support supply chain operations, reducing transportation and demurrage costs and increasing the responsiveness of supply chain operations.
